Ryan Alexander MacDonald is a multimedia artist and author. He was a 2017 Bessie Award Nominee in “Outstanding Composition and Sound Design” for his work in Vanessa Anspaugh’s The End of Men. He is the author of the story collection The Observable Characteristics of Organisms (FC2) and the winner of the 2012 American Short(er) Fiction Award. He works mainly with his partner and long-time collaborator, choreographer Aretha Aoki and has designed sound for choreographers such as Devynn Emory, Tristan Koepke and Rebecca Steinberg. His work has been featured in venues such as New York Live Arts, Abrons Art Center, Judson, Danspace Project, Bates Dance Festival, Crossroads Gallery and more. He has developed a wide variety of animation and media art for artists like Tom Friedman, publishing companies such as Queen’s Ferry Press, and theater productions for Bowdoin College. Ryan has an MFA in Studio Art and an MFA in English from UMASS, Amherst. He lives in Maine where he teaches courses on Sound Design and Digital Art at SMCC.
